| 1. How did we accumulate this debt
and over what time period?
The debt has existed since our last addition
was built in 1990/91. It has decreased over the
years but the last couple of years have added to
it due to deficit budgets and cash flow issues.
2. Is it wise to pay down the debt right now
with interest rates at an all time low?
It is wise to retire the debt in order to aid
our operating budget as the equivalent of one
family’s tuition is currently servicing this
debt and not supporting operational needs. The
debt is also held primarily by individual note
holders who could recall their loans at any time
thus putting additional strain on replacing
these funds.
3. What is a “reserve” fund and what are its
benefits? How would it be managed?
A reserve fund is a stewardly way of setting
aside funds in order to manage inevitable,
one-time capital items such as HVAC systems or
roof replacement.
4. Why pave the parking lot and what are the
other site upgrades?
This is primarily a safety and liability
issue as the present parking lot is difficult to
keep clear and safe; especially during winter
months. Other upgrades include redoing the
shingles on the roof, upgrading windows, and
expanding the computer lab library.
5. Isn’t curriculum provided by the OACS of
which we are a member?
The OACS does write a lot of curriculum for
the Christian Schools in Ontario and we purchase
this curriculum at a member price. They do not
provide curriculum in all areas. We also are in
need of curriculum other than text books. We
hope to purchase more in the area of science,
math, music, and physical education equipment.
We are also in need of classroom chairs and
desks, which comes from our curriculum budget.
6. Why are computers necessary at school with
most students having access to their own at
home?
Many students have access to computers at
home, but school is where we teach the student
the use of many everyday programs. Our
curriculum includes teaching and preparing
students to utilize computers in many aspects of
learning. In order for our equipment to be able
to do that effectively it needs to be updated
regularly and properly.
7. What’s going on with our current database and
why spend so much on a new system?
Our current database program is obsolete and
will be unsupported after June 2010. This is an
opportunity to integrate report cards, finance,
and our website in order to more effectively
manage our data.
8. What is the plan for spending on Community
Relations?
The primary goal is to update and revitalize
our promotional material including some
investment in the website.
9. Why hire a consulting firm to help us with
the campaign?
Professional fundraisers provide extensive
experience in conducting successful campaigns.
They are instrumental in guiding organizations
through the challenges of raising significant
funds including volunteer recruitment and
motivation, building and maintaining campaign
momentum, and developing strong fundraising
strategies to ensure the fundraising goal is
met. Through their objectivity they are able to
recommend the best course of action for the
benefit of the organization and successful
outcome of the campaign. Consultants are also
committed to transferring their fundraising
knowledge to the client throughout the campaign
to empower them for the future.
BCS has contracted The Dennis Group Inc., a
faith-based consulting firm, because of their
extensive experience working with Christian
Schools and guiding them through the campaign
process.
10. Are we moving to an education model that is
geared more to the mentality that our children’s
education can simply be bought?
No. Brantford Christian School recognizes
that parents are responsible for their
children’s education and having entrusted this
responsibility with the school they are
encouraged to be an integral part of various
aspects of the school as a community of
believers. In response to the Lord’s blessing,
their involvement may continue many years after
their children have graduated.
